Virginia Ag Jay Jones candidate was found guilty of reckless driving at 116 mph in 2022

The Democratic candidate for Virginia General Prosecutor Jay Jones faces a meticulous examination after the files revealed that he was found guilty of reckless driving in 2022.
The incident, during which he broke 116 miles per hour on Interstate 64 in New Kent County, occurred about a year after Jones’ first campaign for the Attorney General.

Under Virginia’s law, Reckless Driving is a class 1 offense which has a maximum penalty of 12 months in prison, a fine of $ 2,500 and a license suspension.
Jones was finally found guilty of the accusation, paid a fine and fulfilled additional requirements. There is no indication that he is serving a prison sentence.
Following information on the conviction, Jones told Fox News Digital that the incident was a “serious error”.
“Several years ago, I made the speed error, for which I am regrets,” Jones said in a statement.
“I accepted the responsibility of my actions, paid for the fine and assured my responsibility towards the court, which was accepted by the office of the lawyer of the New Kent County Commonwealth and the judge,” added Jones.

In a statement published at Fox News Digital, Outgoing prosecutor Jason Miyares castigated Jones and said he was “alarmed by reports on Jay Jones recklessly in danger of lives”.
“Instead of taking responsibility for his actions, it seems that my opponent submitted a letter to the court indicating that he had carried out 500 hours of” community service “for his own political action committee, which is not a charity organization under the Virginia Code, to dodge a potential prison sentence,” added Miyares.
The speed revelation arrives only a few weeks before the Virginians went to the ballot box during a competitive election on a state scale, creating what some analysts call a “October surprise” in the 2025 prosecutor’s race.

Jones, 36, is from Norfolk and graduate of William & Mary and the Law School of the University of Virginia.
He served the 2018 Virginia House of Delegates to 2022, representing the 89th district, and previously worked at the Prosecutor General.

Voters will decide on November 4 if Jones will be able to overcome controversy and overturned miyares.
“Our laws are not suggestions,” said Miyares. “This new information raises serious and disturbing questions about the judgment of Jay Jones, its ability to respect the law and, ultimately, its qualifications for the Attorney General.”
