Jason Donovan to return to Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

34 years since he first played Joseph in the 1991 London Palladium production of Joseph and the Amazing Dreamcoat Technicolor, Jason Donovan revealed he will return to the show to play the Pharaoh on the much-loved’s upcoming tour Andrew Lloyd Webber And Tim Rice musical.

Donovan will play the role for one week only at the Mayflower Theater in Southhampton from May 13-18, 2025.

As previously announced, the current stars of the touring production Christine Bianco as narrator and Adam Filipe like Joseph, with Hugh Cotton like Reuben, and Will Haswell like Simeon. Joe McElderry will take on the role of the Pharaoh for select stops on the new tour.

Commenting on his return, the “Too many broken hearts” said: “Joseph will always hold a special place in my heart and returning to performing in the new Palladium production and later touring the UK as Pharaoh has been an incredible experience. The Southampton crowd was electrifying and I can’t wait to return to the city later this year when I play my only dates of the 2025 tour. Make sure you don’t miss your ‘dream’ ticket!”

Joseph and the Amazing Dreamcoat Technicolor is a beloved musical comedy by Andrew Lloyd Webber (music) and Tim Rice (lyrics). It was first performed as a 15-minute pop cantata in 1968 and has since become a full-length theatrical production celebrated around the world.

The musical is a retelling of the biblical story of Joseph from the book of Genesis. It follows Joseph, his father’s favorite son, who receives a multi-colored coat. His jealous brothers sell him into slavery, leading him on a journey of misfortune and triumph. Eventually, Joseph rises to power in Egypt and reunites with his family, addressing themes of forgiveness and redemption.

The show has enjoyed countless productions, including West End and Broadway performances, regional theater performances and school productions. Its adaptability and energetic score have made it a favorite of amateur and professional companies alike.

Notable actors like Donny Osmond, Gareth Portes, Ian ‘H’ Watkins, Sheridan Smith, Alexandra Burke And Linzi Hateley have starred in major productions.
