Violent and ardent riots broke out in Los Angeles for several days in response to ice activity in the region. The Trump administration deployed 700 navies and federalized approximately 4,000 soldiers from the National Guard in Los Angeles to repress the riots. This decision was harshly criticized as useless and illegal by the governor of California Gavin Newsom, mayor Karen Bass and other Democrats.

Newsom continued the Trump administration for deploying troops from the California National Guard despite its opposition. He argued that the national guard troops probably violated the posse Comitatus Act, which prohibits troops from leading civilians on American soil.

The governor won a first victory in the case after a federal judge ruled that the deployment of the guard was illegal and exceeded the authority of Trump. A court of appeal threw this order and the control of the troops remained with the federal government. The Federal Court should hear the arguments next month to find out if the troops violate the posse Comitatus Act.
