Vice -president JD Vance praised the progress that the troops of the National Guard have made the fight against crime in Washington in the last nine days – and have suggested that their mission could extend the last 30 days.
President Donald Trump unveiled the plans on August 11 to deploy Troops from the National Guard to DC and federalize the Metropolitan Police Department to fight crime in Washington. And, so far, these efforts bear fruit, according to Vance.
“We see truly substantial effects because these guys break their A—,” said Vance by meeting the national guard troops at the Washington union station on Wednesday.

“Here in Union Station, you have vagabonds, you have drug addicts, you have the chronic homeless, you have the mental patients who harass, who threatened violence, who attacked families,” said Vance. “And they have done so for too long. It should be a monument to American size.”
The 1973 law on the domicile rule enabled a temporary federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department for emergency situations up to 30 days. However, after this period, the congress must intervene and sign on all extensions. However, there is no limitation for the troops of the National Guard of DC in the law on the rule of the domicile.
On August 13, Trump said that the administration’s objective was to quickly reduce crime, but reported that “we will want extensions.”
When asked if extensions were on the table, Vance said Trump would reassess, depending on the amount of progress in the coming weeks.

“We will finally let the President of the United States determine where we are after 30 days, of this emergency order. I think we are going to make a lot of progress over the next 20 days,” said Vance. “I think we are nine days in this thing. But if the President of the United States thinks that he must extend his order to ensure that people have access to public security, then that is exactly what he will do. If he thinks he does not have to do this, we will obviously take this determination.”
Meanwhile, Washington officials have taken legal action contesting the Trump administration’s decision to federate local police on Friday.

“By illegally declaring an MPD takeover, the administration abuses its temporary authority and limited under the law,” wrote the prosecutor general of Washington, DC, Brian Schwalb in a Friday X post. “This is the most serious threat to the domicile rule that DC has ever faced, and we are fighting to stop it.”
In addition to the DC National Guard, the troops of the Ohio National Guard, Virginia-Western, South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee participate in the repression of the Trump administration in Washington, and around 1,300 have already arrived in the national capital.
