USS New Orleans Blaze extinguished in Okinawa, now under investigation

The USS New Orleans Warship caught fire on Wednesday off the coast of Okinawa, Japan, leaving two injured sailors, officials said.
The fire on the amphibious transport quay of the San Antonio class burned for about 12 hours in the water at White Beach Navality in Okinawa before the fire was declared early Thursday morning, the 7th fleet of the US Navy said in a statement.
The fire on the 684 -foot long ship is the subject of a investigation.
Two sailors were treated for minor injuries, but no details on injuries were immediately provided.

Sailors aboard the warship fought the fire with the help of the USS San Diego crew, another warship that was moored in the water at White Beach Navality in Okinawa, as well as the Japanese coastal and military guard.

The navy said that its crew would remain on board the ship. The USS New Orleans, which was ordered in 2007, can contain up to 800 people.

The incident occurs five years after a fire broke out aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard and burned for five days in San Diego in July 2020. A sailor was accused and acquitted later to have started it.

In this case, a report of the navy concluded that there were radical failures by commanders, crew members and other people involved. The ship was left with extended structural, electric and mechanical damage and was then scrapped.
