A new agreement between the United States and Mexico aimed at resolving the Tijuana River Water Water crisis is a “massive” victory for the Americans living in the San Diego region, announced the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Lee Zeldin, announced this week.
The understanding memorandum was signed on Thursday while EPA said that “for many decades, the untreated raw wastewater is sunk in southern California from Mexico, polluting the Tijuana river valley, closing the beaches, enclosing the tunes, harming the region’s economy and ecoguring the two sides of the border.”
“The Trump administration is proud to deliver this huge victory in terms of environmental and national security for the Americans in the San Diego region who live with these disgusting raw wastewater that has been flowing in their communities for too long,” Zeldin said in a statement.
The EPA said that the agreement responds to several “main priorities of the Trump administration and essential milestones to ensure a 100% solution to this problem” – in particular accelerating existing critical infrastructure projects.

“To this end, Mexico will immediately require internal funding to initiate the process of building the diversion, which will divert 10 million gallons per day from treated effluents entering the Tijuana river, and the rehabilitation of the parallel gravity line.
He also declared that “several parallel projects necessary for Mexico have been added to take into account the future demographic growth of Tijuana and operating and maintenance costs”.
