The United Kingdom, Canada and Australia announced the recognition of the Palestinian state on Sunday, in the hope that a two-state solution will bring peace with Israel despite the demonstrations by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said this decision aims to “revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and the Israelis”.

“We recognized the state of Israel over 75 years ago as a homeland for the Jewish people,” said Starmer in a video message published on X. “Today we join more than 150 countries that also recognize a Palestinian state.

He insisted on the fact that the recognition of the State was not a reward for Hamas, the terrorist group which carried out the mortal on October 7, 2023, attacking Israel which led to some 1,200 people, mainly civilians, killed and the abduction of another 251. Hamas is the current Palestinian power organization of the Gaza Strip.

“Hamas is a brutal terrorist organization,” said Starmer, adding that Hamas will have “no future in government, no role in security”, in a Palestinian state.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has also recognized a Palestinian state, posting on X that Canada offers its “partnership in the realization of the promise of a peaceful future for the state of Palestine and the State of Israel”.

The Prime Minister of Australia Anthony Albanese and Penny Wong, Minister of Foreign Affairs and head of government in the Senate, said in a joint statement announcing his recognition from the Palestinian state that Hamas “should have no role in Palestine”.

“The recognition of Australia of Palestine today, alongside Canada and the United Kingdom, is part of an international effort coordinated to create a new momentum for a solution to two states, starting with a cease-fire in Gaza and the publication of the hostages taken in the atrocities of October 7, 2023,” said the press release.

More than 145 countries already recognize a Palestinian state, including more than a dozen in Europe.

The government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejects a two -state solution given the current geopolitical situation in the region, Netanyahu claiming that countries declaring their recognition of Palestine “reward terror with a huge price”.

“It will not happen,” said Netanyahu after the countries made their announcements. “A Palestinian state will not be established west of the Jordan river.”

Netanyahu said he would announce Israel’s response after a trip next week to the United States, where he should meet President Donald Trump in the White House.

Trump expressed his disapproval of this decision by the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia during a visit to Great Britain last week.
