The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree withdrawing his country from an international agreement prohibiting Monday the use of anti-personal mines.

The 1997 Ottawa Convention prohibits the use, production, storage and transfer of anti-personal land mines under the reasoning that it causes too much danger to civilians after the end of hostilities. Ukraine was one of the approximately 160 countries that had accepted the treaty, although Russia has never done so.

“Russia has never been a party to this convention and uses extremely cynically anti-personal mines,” Zelenskyy said in a statement. “And not only now, in the war against Ukraine. It is the signing style of the Russian killers – to destroy life by all the methods at their disposal.”

Zelenskyy’s announcement is not the last step in the officially withdrawal from the treaty, because the Parliament of Ukraine must now vote on the issue.

Ukraine has greatly suffered in recent years from Russia’s own use of anti-personal land mines. Regions that Ukrainian forces have freed themselves from the Russian invaders were scattered devices, causing injuries to civilians and soldiers.

The news of kyiv’s withdrawal from Kiev occurs just a day after Moscow drew 537 air weapons towards Ukraine, including 477 drones and lures and 60 missiles, according to Ukraine Air Force. Ukraine said it was the largest air attack so far in war.

Among the weapons, 249 were killed and 226 were lost, probably blocked electronically.
