Turkey forest fires threaten the fourth largest city, forcing 1,700 evacuations

Forest fires that harassed Turkey for weeks now threaten the country’s fourth city on Sunday, forcing 1,700 evacuations and leaving another dead firefighter.

The fires surround the city of Bursa in northwestern Turkey, the government saying that it has evacuated 1,765 people and deployed about 1,900 firefighters to fight fire. The conflagration has so far burned more than 7,000 acres and has won the life of at least one firefighter, who has had a heart attack on the scene.

Forest Minister Ibrahim Yumakli said that firefighters across the country confronted 84 separate flames on Saturday. The northwest of the country was under the greatest threat, including Karabuk, where forest fires have burned since Tuesday, he said.

Friday, the Directorate General of Meteorology said that Turkey had recorded its highest temperature of 122.9 degrees Fahrenheit in the southeast province of Sirnak.

Fourteen people have died in recent weeks, including 10 rescue volunteers and forestry workers killed Wednesday in a fire in Eskisehir in western Turkey.

The Minister of Justice, Yilmaz Tunc, said late Saturday Saturday, that prosecutors had investigated fires in 33 provinces since June 26 and that legal actions had been taken against 97 suspects.

Bulgarian national firefighter services, Alexander Djartov, said that he had called on European Union partners to fight fires. He said planes were expected from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, France, Hungary and Sweden later on Sunday.
