A group of Democrats from the New York Chamber says that the annual financing proposal for the government of President Donald Trump, if it was promulgated, could leave large cities vulnerable to massive terrorist attacks.

“We write to express the most serious concerns about the existential threat that the budget proposed by the Trump administration poses to the internal security of New York,” the Democrats wrote.

“Here is the essential: Trump’s budget, if it was adopted, would leave the largest American city that is not prepared to prevent and respond to a second September 11.”

The new daring accusation comes while left -wing legislators continue to criticize the efforts of the Republicans to reduce federal spending. The national debt, meanwhile, climbs towards 37 billions of dollars.

The letter was signed by the Democratic representatives of New York Ritchie Torres, Yvette Clarke, Gregory Meeks, Dan Goldman and Jerry Nadler.

They argued that the “draconian cuts” of internal security subsidies “would almost dismantle FDNY’s ability for emergency management and reduce the device to combat terrorism after September 11 of the NYPD to a shell of its old self.”

The letter is addressed to the first Republican and Democrat of the Chamber’s credits committee, which has already started working on the federal budget for the next year in time for the deadline of September 30.

The White House has published a “meager” budgetary proposal for the exercise (FY) 2026, which, if adopted, would make the promise of the Republicans to reduce public spending which, according to them, have become uncontrollable.

The proposal would reduce $ 163 billion in non -defensive discretionary public spending – which means federal funding that Congress controls each year, rather than compulsory financing, which is largely composed of government security net programs which are modified by a distinct process called budgetary reconciliation.

The non -profit organization International Association of Firefighters The budget analysis indicated that the internal security subsidy program (SHSGP) would be reduced from $ 468 million to $ 351 million, and that the UASS security initiative (UASSI) would be reduced from $ 553.5 million to $ 415.5 million – two programs highlighted by New York.

The legislator’s letter said New York could see $ 45 million in internal security subsidies reduced in Trump’s budget.

“The Trump budget is an act of national self-sabotage,” they said. “In the first half of 2025, we saw seven terrorist plots – about one per month. 24 years after the terrorist attacks on September 11, the threat of terrorism remains as real as it has ever been.”

Democrats noted that the police and New York fire services “regularly provide reinforcements and technical assistance to jurisdictions across the United States”.

“Internal security subsidies for New York allows a national mutual aid network between and between states,” they said.

The budget proposal for the White House FY26 is traditionally only an initial plan which undergoes changes as legislators negotiate what is possible.

However, with a republican trifecta in Washington, the Republicans will probably be subject to additional pressure to deliver a vision as close as possible to Trump.

In addition, GOP legislators also work on the legislation on tax and immigration that Trump has nicknamed his “big and beautiful bill”, with the aim of bringing this bill to the Trump office by July 4.

When contacted to comment on the letter, the White House referred to Fox News Digital at the Management and Budget Office (OMB) and the Ministry of Internal Security (DHS).

A DHS spokesperson said: “DHS ‘claims reduce the prevention of terrorism which are unequivocal.”

“The allegations of weakening these programs are baseless. The DHS improves information and the protection of infrastructure to ensure the security of cities. We remain fully dedicated to September 11 prevention with robust and targeted investments,” said DHS spokesperson.

But representative Rosa Delauro, D-Conn., The best democrat of the Chamber’s credit committee, told Fox News Digital: “We do not even have a full budget request from President Trump in 2026, but from what we have seen, the cuts he proposes through the federal government threatened our national security.”

“The Republicans of the Chamber are responsible for writing these bills and Democrats are ready to work in a bipartite manner, but we will not support the final financing bills 2026 which fail to ensure the security of our communities,” said Delauro.

A spokesperson for the president of the Credit Committee of the Chamber, Tom Cole, R-Okla., Did not send a comment request to the letter.
