President Donald Trump warned that his deadline of August 1 for having concluded a trade agreement with the United States “is strong on Wednesday, threatening several key nations with a large price hike.

“The deadline for August is the first deadline in August – it is strong and will not be extended. A big day for America!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, using all caps.

Here are the main countries that still have to negotiate agreements with the United States

Canada

Trump sent a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney threatening a price of 35% if an agreement is not concluded, but negotiations seem to have blocked.

“We didn’t really have a lot of luck with Canada. I think Canada could be the one where they will only pay prices. It is not really a negotiation,” Trump said about negotiations with our northern neighbor on Friday.

Carney himself said on Monday that negotiations had reached an “intense phase”.

“It is a complex negotiation. You see with the various commercial transactions which were agreed by other jurisdictions – the European Union yesterday, Japan before that, Indonesia, the United Kingdom – that there are many elements to these negotiations. We are engaged in them.

According to the US trade representative (USTR), Canada is the third American importer, totaling $ 412.7 billion in 2024. The United States exported $ 349.4 billion in Canada in Canada the same year.

Mexico

Trump sent a similar letter to the Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum earlier this month, the latter threatening a price of 30%.

However, no agreement was concluded on Wednesday, and none of the parties expressed where the negotiations are.

Mexico is the main source of American imports, totaling $ 506 billion in 2024, according to the USTR. Meanwhile, the United States exported $ 334 billion to the country during the same year.

China

The secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent, negotiated with Chinese officials in Sweden this week and said on Tuesday that the talks were “very constructive”.

However, he underlined to journalists that no final agreement was concluded. Unlike most countries, China is faced with a deadline for August 12 rather than on August 1, which gives them a little more breathing for negotiations.

“Nothing has been agreed until we talk to President Trump,” said journalists.

Commerce secretary Howard Lunick told Fox News on Monday that the deadline for China could be extended even more than August 12, although this decision is up to Trump.

South Korea

Trump warned the South Korean president Lee Jae Myung in a letter of July 7 according to which the country would face a coverage rate of 25% if an agreement is not concluded by August 1.

Lee’s office said at the end of last week that he was preparing a proposal. Lutnick met three senior Korean officials in Washington this week, although no news has come out of the meeting.

Taiwan

Taiwan has not yet concluded a trade agreement with the Trump administration, but Taipei has a delegation in Washington in the hope of getting there before August 1, Reuters reported on Wednesday.

The autonomous island is faced at a rate of 32% if it does not obtain an agreement.

“All relevant discussions are still underway,” said a familiar source with Reuters talks, with another saying that negotiators were still in the United States

“We hope that these negotiations will achieve four objectives: to safeguard national interests, to protect industrial interests, to ensure public health and to ensure food security. These objectives are used to double: promote balanced bilateral trade between Taiwan and the United States, and improve cooperation in various fields such as technology and national security,” said Taiwan in a declaration.

India

Trump seems to have closed the door very early on India, announcing on Truth Social that the country will face a price of 25% at all levels from August 1.

“Remember, While India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the world, and they have the Most Strenuous and Obnoxious Non-Monetary Trade Barriers of Any Country. Have Always Bough a Vast Majority of Their Military Equipment from Russia, and Are Russia’s Large Buyer of Energy, Along with China, at Time when Everyone Wants Russia to Stop the Killing in Ukraine – All that is not good! “

“India will therefore pay a price of 25%, plus a penalty for the above, from August 1. Thank you for your attention to this case. Maga!” He added.

Brazil

Trump threatened a massive 50% coverage rate on Brazilian products in a letter to the Brazilian president Luiz inácio Lula da Silva earlier in July.

Trump has awarded the higher rate to Brazil’s prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro, which many compared to Trump himself. The American president said Bolsonaro was the victim of a “witch hunt”.

The Lula regime has requested that the United States exempt certain tariff industries, but an agreement before August 1 seems unlikely.
