President Donald Trump thought about the attempt to assassinate against him on Sunday, claiming that he believed that God he alone saved him that day to “restore our beloved republic to greatness and to save our nation from those who seek his ruin”.

The candidate of the time survived an assassination attempt during a campaign rally on July 13, 2024 in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump suffered an injury to his ear after a bullet collapsed, while a person was killed and a pair of others was injured.

An elite of the secret service killed the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, who had climbed to the top of a neighboring building.

“A year ago today, at 6:11 pm – eight minutes after getting on stage on the field of Butler Farms to address thousands of Americans gathered during a campaign gathering – a rifle fire broke out, and a ball of an assassin came in a quarter of thumb of the end of my life and to silence our movement to restore the American grandeur,” said Trump on Sunday.

“However, by the hand of Providence and the grace of the Almighty God, my life was spared,” he continued. “While we commemorate a year since the heartbreaking events of July 13, 2024, we reaffirm that the American spirit has and will always triumph over the forces of evil and destruction.”

The president congratulated those who rushed to help the victims of the rally, including the first stakeholders and the participants in the ordinary rally who, he said, “left as heroes”.

“Those who wear scars from this July evening defended our Republic during one of the darkest hours of our country, realizing the wounded in the middle of chaos and uncertainty to provide comfort and living care,” said Trump.

He added that the doctors and the first speakers rushed to help the wounded, while the rallies guided their fellow citizens to security and “the patriots raised their fists in the air in a wave of support and national pride”.

“These men and women arrived at the rally as ordinary Americans, but left like heroes,” said Trump. “They represent the best of our nation, and we are forever indebted for their kindness and their compassion.”

Trump also underlined the name of Corey Comperatore, the participant in the rally who was killed protecting his family during the event.

“The world will never forget the tragic loss of Corey Comperatore, firefighter, veteran and dedicated husband and father,” said Trump. “When shots broke out, Corey did not hesitate to protect his wife and two daughters. He died a hero, and we are eternally grateful for his inspiring love, value and loyalty.”

Butler’s shooting raised questions about how the suspect was able to climb on a nearby building and firing eight shots to Trump, leading to a meticulous examination of the secret services and the resignation of its director following the incident.

Questions were raised on the agency after another incident in September during which a shooter camped in shrubs outside one of Trump’s golf courses before being shot by a secret service agent.

Under the new direction appointed by Trump, the agency worked to combat failures that were highlighted last year, starting with the butler shooting. But questions about the security towers remain, and the shooter’s motive remains uncertain.

“He remains my firm conviction that God alone saved me that day for a fair purpose: to restore our beloved republic to greatness and to save our nation from those who seek his ruin,” said Trump in his declaration. “A year after the attempt at my life in Butler, our country is in the midst of a new golden age. History will remember the potential assassin for its cowardice and failure, but the magnificent heritage of the heroes of July 13, 2024 will be forever engraved in the heart of our nation.”

Trump also told journalists on Sunday that he didn’t like to think about the butler’s assassination attempt.

“I don’t like to think about it much,” said Trump. “I have a job to do, so I don’t like thinking about it much. It’s a bit of a dangerous profession as a president, but I really don’t like thinking about it. Better to think about it.”
