The Trump administration revoked the terrorist designation of Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham, the militant group who overthrew President Bashar Al’assad and took control of the Syrian government.
The group was formed as the Syrian branch of Al-Qaeda. In an amazing turnaround, the acting leader of the Ahmed Al-Sharaa group went from an American bonus of $ 10 million on the head to the de facto chief of Syria who marked a meeting with President Donald Trump in June.
Al-Sharaa had campaigned hard for a relationship with Washington and Rescue sanctions: He proposed to build a Trump tower in Damascus, to facilitate hostilities with Israel and to give us access to petroleum and gas in Syria. He worked to soften the image of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and promised an inclusive governor structure.
“In consultation with the Attorney General and the Secretary of the Treasury, I revoke by this the designation of the Al-Nurah Front, also known as Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham (and other alias) as a foreign terrorist organization,” said the Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote in a service note Monday public.

Trump to sign the order of lifting sanctions for Syria
This decision comes a week after Trump signed an executive decree ending the sanctions imposed on Syria. Trump said he would raise sanctions against Syria to give the nation, ravaged by decades of civil war, a chance of economic development.
Treasury secretary Scott Bessent said that the lifting of sanctions would help Syria “restore links with global trade and strengthen international trust”, while continuing to prevent “Assad, its friends, its terrorists and other illicit actors to try to destabilize Syria and the region”.
HTS, a Sunni Islamist group, came out of Jabhat al-Nura, the former subsidiary of Al-Qaeda Syria. The State Department under Trump in 2018 added HTS to the existing Al-Nura foreign terrorist designation.
