President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin finished an “extremely productive” summit aimed at ending the war in Ukraine on Friday, although the next steps are not clear.
Putin, who spoke first during a joint press conference held by the two world leaders, described talks as a “constructive atmosphere of mutual respect”.
The chief of the Kremlin said that a “agreement” had been concluded, but neither of the two leaders extended the details relating to talks, and they did not respond to journalists.
Trump says he “will not be happy” if Putin does not accept a cease-fire in Ukraine during the Alaska summit
The talks ended after only three hours, much more than an hour for less original estimates and more than three hours shorter than the Kremlin only thought the discussions will not take.
“Today’s agreement will be the starting point not only for the solution in Ukraine, but will also help us bring business … between Russia and the United States,” said Putin.
Putin described the Nation of Ukraine as a “fraternal nation” but continued to say that the “primary roots” of the conflict must be “eliminated” – terminology which he previously used to justify his illegal invasion of 2022.
Trump then described the summit as “extremely productive” and said, “many points” were accepted, but he did not develop where agreements were concluded.

But Trump also said that the parties are “not yet there” to advance a peace agreement.
“There were a lot, many points on which we agree, most of them, I would say. A few big ones that we are not quite obtained, but we have made progress,” said Trump.
“There is no agreement before there is an agreement,” he added.

Trump said he would call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and NATO leaders to discuss the content of his discussions with Putin.
Trump clearly indicated that he hoped that the next step would be that Zelenskyy and Putin meet in person, although it is not clear if progress has been made for this meeting to occur.
