About three quarters of health insurance providers in the country have signed a series of commitments this week to improve patient care by reducing bureaucratic obstacles caused by the authorization of insurance companies.
Director of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Dr. Mehmet Oz, alongside the Secretary of Health and Social Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., announced the new voluntary commitment of a group of insurance suppliers, who cover around 75% of the population, during a press conference on Monday. New commitments aim to accelerate and reduce the previous authorization processes used by insurers, a process that has long been unnecessarily delaying patient care and other bureaucratic obstacles with a negative impact on patients.
“Commitment is not a mandate. It is not a bill, a rule. It is not legislated. It is an opportunity for the industry to show itself,” said Oz on Monday. “But by the fact that three -quarters of the country’s patients are already covered by the participants in this commitment, it is a good start and the answer was overwhelming.”

Previous authorization is a process which obliges providers to obtain approval of the insurance provider of a patient before this supplier can offer certain treatments or services. Essentially, the process seeks to ensure that patients get the right solution for a particular problem.
However, according to OZ, the process led doctors forced to spend huge amounts of power to meet the requirements of the insurer’s previous authorization. He noted at the press conference on Monday that, on average, doctors must spend 12 hours a week to process these requirements, that they see around 40 of the week.
“This frustrates doctors. It sometimes leads to care that is considerably delayed. This erodes public confidence in the health system. This is something that we cannot tolerate,” insisted Oz.

The commitment was adopted by some of the country’s largest insurance suppliers, including United Healthcare, Cigna, Humana, Blue Cross & Blue Shield, Aetna and many others. Although industry -run commitments aim to improve care for patients, it could potentially eat in their benefits also if patients are starting to look for care more often.
The commitments of cemented insurers this week include taking active measures to implement a common normalized process for electronic prior authorization thanks to the development of standardized submission requirements to take charge of the faster execution time. The objective is that the new executive is operational by January 1, 2027.
Another part of the promise includes a commitment to individual insurance schemes to implement certain reductions in its use of previous medical authorization by January 1, 2026. On that date, if patients change insurers during treatment, their new plan must honor their existing previous approvals for 90 days while the patient transit.

Transparency is also a key element of the new commitments of insurers. The health plans that enjoins commitments undertake to provide clear and easy to understand explanations of the determinations of the previous authorization, including the advice for calls. The commitment also stipulates that in 2027, 80% of electronic approvals for business authorization will be responded in real time.
Oz, at the press conference on Monday, compared the commitment led by industry to the Bible, saying: “The sweets will inherit the earth.”
“I always grew up thinking that” Meek “meant weak, but that’s not what Meek means.” Meek “means that you have a sharp sword, a sword that could make real damage to people around you, but you decide, to do so, to make Great this sword and put it away for a while, even if we are competitors, so that you can do important things,” said Monday.
