President Donald Trump and former President Barack Obama discussed golf for a viral moment of biparism during the funeral of former president Jimmy Carter in January, just a few days before Trump’s return to the oval office, a new book detailed the unprecedented electoral cycle in 2024.

Trump and Obama were seen smiling and quietly chatting with each other in the Washington National Cathedral benches on January 9, 2025, in a moment that has spread like forest fires on social networks while the Americans resounded with speculations on what the pairs of presidents who had long exchanged political barbs.

“2024: How Trump took over the White House and the Democrats lost America”, which was published on Tuesday, said that Trump arrived in Washington for Carter’s funeral as “conqueror” after the November 2024 elections and sat next to Obama for funeral.

“He had attended the funeral of Jimmy Carter, walking in Washington not as a scourge but as a conqueror,” said the book about Trump. “He could ignore the speech on the character by the outgoing president and the cold shoulder of the vice-president that he had defeated.”

“Instead, he sat next to Barack Obama and invited him to play golf course, attracting him with descriptions of Trump lessons around the world,” continued the couple’s conversation book. “He was no longer an anomaly. He was treated as an American president. He wanted us to remember him like a big one.”

Trump and Obama were sitting near other former high-level American leaders, including former president George W. Bush, former vice-president Mike Pence, former president Bill Clinton, former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, as well as the president of the time, Joe Biden, and the president of the time, Kamala Harris.

Social media commentators at the time pointed out that images and video clips of the pair were unexpected, and others joked that Obama may have voted for Trump despite years of trading in political beards.

“Trump and Obama seated side by side was not on the Bingo 2025 card”, a social media user Posted on X in January.

“Did Obama also voted for Trump?!” Clay Travis, founder of the Sports and Politics comments platform, Outkick, joked at the time.

Trump was questioned at the viral moment before his inauguration, pointing out that he “did not realize how friendly he was”.

“I said,” My boy, they look like two people who love each other. “And we probably do,” Trump added at the time. “We have a little different philosophies, right? But we probably do it. I don’t know. We have just heard. But I heard about everyone.”
