The American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said on Friday that it planned to reduce its workforce by 23% and close its research and development office.
The loss of more than 3,000 employees occurs after layoffs and incentives to leave the agency in the middle of the Trump administration effort to rationalize the federal government.
“Under the direction of President Trump, the EPA examined our operations closely to ensure that the agency is better equipped than ever to deliver our main mission to protect human health and the environment while fueling the American return,” said EPA administrator Lee Zeldin, in a press release.

As part of the restructuring, the EPA said that it was planning to open a new applied science office and environmental solutions to replace the Research and Development Office, saying that the new office would allow it to focus on “more than ever” research.
This occurs a week after the Supreme Court issued a decision opening the way to the administration to make mass layoffs.
Justin Chen, president of the American Federation of Government Employees Council 238, which represents thousands of EPA employees, described the research and development office The “heart and brain of the EPA”.

The State Department will start with mass layoffs of around 1,800 employees in the coming days
“Without that, we do not have the means to assess the impacts on human health and the environment,” said Chen. “Its destruction will devastate public health in our country.”
