The Trump administration appeals to the institution of Smithsonian before the celebration of the 250th anniversary of America next year, requiring specific national museums and affiliated exhibitions to “reflect unity, progress and sustainable values that define American history”.
In a letter written to the secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, Lonnie Bunch III, officials of the Trump administration have exposed an examination process that the institution will undergo to ensure the alignment with the executive decree “of restoration and mental health of the American history of President Donald Trump.
“This initiative aims to guarantee alignment with the president’s directive to celebrate American exceptionalism, eliminate division or supporters and restore confidence in our common cultural institutions,” said the letter.

The following museums are included during phase I of the complete internal journal: national museums in American history, natural history, African-American history and culture and American Indians; The National Air and Space Museum; The Smithsonian American Art Museum; The National Portrait Gallery and the Hirshhorn Museum and Garden sculpture.
The administration declared that the examination is “rooted” for the mission and contributions from the institution, and the objective is not to interfere with daily operations, but to highlight “historically exact, edifying and inclusive representations of the American inheritance”.
The review has five development points, ranging from an analysis of the current and future content in the exhibitions in museums to guarantee that all the guidelines for the content of the museum reflect the “original mission of the Smithsonian”.

Museum curators and senior executives will also be questioned to “better understand the selection process, exhibition approval workflows and all executives that currently guide the content of the exhibition”.

The administration also requests that the aforementioned museums provide them with all the documents – including digital files – for current, upcoming and itinerant exhibitions; learning resources; external partnerships; documentation linked to subsidies; Survey responses; and internal guidelines and governance.
All these elements will be examined by the staff responsible for ensuring that the institution aligns with the order of Trump.

A 120 -day implementation directive has been given, but museums should act on certain parts of the process within 30 days of receiving the administration letter.
Immediate tasks include the submission of current descriptions of exhibitions, plans projects for future shows, America 250 programming documents and internal guidelines used in the development of exhibitions. Museums will also choose a staff link to serve as a main contact point during the examination process, which will also include observation visits on site.
Within 120 days, museums will have to implement content corrections, if necessary, and replace any “divided or ideological language with unifying, historically exact and constructive descriptions”.

The Trump administration plans to finish the exam in early 2026 and described the process as “a collaborative and prospective opportunity” which focuses on “the strength, the extent and the achievements of American history”.
“By focusing on Americanism – people, principles and progress that defines our nation – we can work together to renew the role of the Smithsonian as the main institution of the World Museum”, ” The letter read.
He concluded by saying that the objective is that the Smithsonian institution remains “dynamic, reliable and inspiring for future generations”.
