The white house press secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed additional details on President Donald Trump’s health after the photos showed bruises at the back of her hands and apparently swollen legs.

“I know that many in the media speculated on bruises on the president’s hand and also swollen in the president’s legs,” she said on Thursday. “So, in the effort of transparency, the president wanted me to share a note from his doctor with you all today.”

Leavitt read a memo explaining that the swollen legs were part of a “benign and common condition” for people over the age of 70, while bruises on his hands were attributable to “a frequent handshake and the use of aspirin”.

“In the past few weeks, President Trump has noted a slight swelling in the bottom legs,” said Leavitt on Thursday during a press briefing. “In accordance with routine medical care and by abundance of prudence, this concern was fully evaluated by the White House medical unit.

“The president has undergone a complete examination, including diagnostic vascular studies, bilateral bilateral ultrasounds … venous doppler ultrasounds have been carried out and revealed a chronic venous insufficiency, a benign and common condition, in particular among individuals over 70,” said Leavitt.

Leavitt explained that bruises on the back of Trump’s hands were due to his contribution in aspirin and frequently hugging other people.

“In addition, recent photos of the president have shown minor bruises on the back of his hand,” said Leavitt. “This is consistent with the minor irritation of the soft tissue from the frequent handshake and the use of aspirin, which is taken within the framework of a standard cardiovascular prevention diet. The White House circulated the official health note to the media shortly after the press briefing, which concluded: “President Trump remains in excellent health”.
