The United States remember the best diplomat in Colombia on “baseless” statements by civil servants

Secretary of state Marco Rubio announced Thursday that he recalled the interval of Bogotá, Colombia, after what he said was “base -founding and reprehensible statements of senior officials of the Colombian government”.

The State Department declared in a statement that John T. McNamara, the intermediary of business officials for the United States Embassy in Colombia, was recalled in Washington for urgent consultations concerning the “without foundation and reprehensible declarations of the highest levels of the government of Colombia”.

“In addition to the recall of the in charge, the United States continues other measures to clarify our deep concern concerning the current state of our bilateral relationship,” the press release said. “Despite political differences with the current government, Colombia remains an essential strategic partner,” the statement continued. “We are committed to closing cooperation on a range of shared priorities, including regional security and stability, and we remain involved in efforts that improve the lives of Americans and Colombians.”

No other details were available regarding diplomatic recall, although the decision is made after Colombian President Gustavo Petro accused “right -wing extremists” of plotting to overthrow him.

The Associated Press reported in May that the former Foreign Minister of Petro, Alvaro Leyva, accused him of being a “drug addict” for the second time in three weeks.

Leyva would also have published a seven -page letter on X calling for Petro to resign, alleging that the president depends “the substances that affect emotional and mental balance”.

Petro, who was elected in 2022 and who remains in office a year, denied the accusations during a speech in Bogota, in which he claimed to be a “revolutionary” who will not be “enslaved” by drugs.

Leyva had previously accused Petro of taking drugs in a letter published on April 22. In the letter, Leyva said that Petro “had disappeared” for a few days during a state visit to Paris, attributing the absence to the alleged drug use. Petro, however, said he had taken time to visit parents in France.

As for relations between the United States and Colombia, the two countries agreed in March to deploy biometric capacities to help the authorities manage migration and stop criminal activities.

In January, American officials returned two flights of Colombian illegal foreigners to their country of origin, although Petro rejected thefts, saying that the United States cannot “treat Colombian migrants as criminals”.

Petro also demanded that the United States establish a protocol for treatment worthy of migrants before his country received them.

In response, Trump threatened to trigger a series of punishments, in particular by ordering a 25% rate on all goods from the United States from Colombia. After a week, Trump added, prices would increase at 50%. Trump also ordered a travel ban and revocations of visas for all representatives of the Colombian government, as well as “allies and supporters”.

In the end, the two countries reached an agreement and the deportations resumed, although Petro urged Colombian migrants to return home.
