The Secretary General of the United Nations António Guterres, rare praise for President Donald Trump on Tuesday after the president announced a cease-fire between Israel and Iran. Guterres, a vocal critic of Trump, published the positive declaration just a few days after condemning the American strikes in Iran.
“I salute the announcement by President Trump very well of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. I urge the two countries to respect it fully. The fights must stop,” Guterres wrote. “The inhabitants of the two countries have already suffered too much. It is my sincere hope that this cease-fire can be reproduced in other conflicts in the region.”

On June 22, after the United States struck Iran’s nuclear installations, Guterres said that the actions taken by the United States marked “a perilous turn in a region that cannot bear another destruction cycle”. One day earlier, the UN chief offered a similar conviction, saying that he was “seriously alarmed” by strikes.
“There is an increasing risk that this conflict can quickly become uncontrollable – with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region and the world,” wrote Guterres.

Israel-Iran conflict: live updates
Trump announced a ceasefire just over 48 hours after Guterres’ warning, ending what the president called the “12-day war”-probably a reference to the six-day historical war in 1967 of Israel.
Trump expressed his frustration on Tuesday on Israel and Iran when the cease-fire seemed to be about to weaken. He told journalists that he was “not satisfied with Israel” after the country took what he considered an aggressive action just before the entry into force of the ceasefire. The president was also upset when Israel has sworn to retaliate after Iran broke the ceasefire, which Tehran denied.

Trump later announced that Israel would not attack Iran and that the country’s planes “would turn around and return home”. In a subsequent position, he reaffirmed his opposition to Iran with a nuclear weapon and promised that Tehran would never reconstruct his installations. The president also insisted that the two parties wanted to end the war “also”.
