Trump administration Department of Internal Security (DHS) ends the temporary protection status (TPS) for around 520,000 Haitians currently residing in the United States.

TPS designations for the country will expire on August 3, 2025 and the termination will be in force on Tuesday September 2, 2025.

“This decision restores integrity into our immigration system and guarantees that temporary protection status is in fact temporary,” said a spokesperson for the DHS.

“The environmental situation in Haiti has improved enough for Haitian citizens to return home. We encourage these people to take advantage of the department’s resources to return to Haiti, which can be organized through the Home CBP application. Haitian nationals can continue a legal status through other requests for immigration services, if they are eligible.”

Noem has made the decision to revoke TPS status after examining an American report on citizenship and immigration services (USCIS) which have shown that Haiti no longer meets the statutory requirements which give foreign residents the ability to obtain temporary protected status.

The Supreme Court allows Trump Admin to go to the end of legal protections for certain Venezuelan migrants

TPS was created by the Congress in the 1990 Immigration Act with the intention of authorizing residents of countries that have faced natural disasters, war or other dangerous extraordinary conditions of refuge in the United States, the program can be extended by an increase of 18 months.

The Trump administration made difficult pressure to reduce TPS designations to keep a campaign promise to strengthen the border and expel many illegal migrants who crossed the border during the Biden administration.

President Joe Biden granted TPS status to the Venezuelans in 2021 and again just before leaving his duties in January 2025, a designation to the South American nation from April 3, 2025 to October 2, 2026.
