The survey reflects a weak belief in the American dream to move forward via hard work

In the United States, a recent survey of the Wall Street Journal-Nok in the United States has revealed generalized bitter economic feelings, with only 31% indicating that they think that the American dream-that a person can take front by working hard-remains true.
A huge 46% said they thought it was previously true but did not do it anymore, while 23% said that the idea of the American dream never stood true. The nearly 70% of individuals adopting these opinions mark the largest level in almost 15 years of surveys, according to the Newspaper.
The survey of adults conducted between July 10 to 23, 2025 has “a global margin for sampling error is +/- 3.39 percentage points at the 95%level of confidence, including the design effect”, the methodology section of study notes.

Many people are concerned about the cost of the grocery store, with 28% extremely concerned about food prices, 28% very concerned and 30% somewhat concerned, while only 10% were not very concerned and that 4% had no concerns about the problem.
While 66% in the investigation said they moved to cheaper products to reduce grocery costs in the past year, only 33% said they hadn’t done it.

Only a quarter of those questioned agreed that people like them and their families have a good chance of increasing their standard of living – only 6% agreed, while 19% were somewhat in agreement, 23% strongly disagree and 19% were somewhat disagreeing, and 32% did not agree or disagree. The 25% statistics of those indicating that they are good at the point of improving their standard of living has marked a record level for the surveys dating from 1987, the newspaper reported.
A large majority of those questioned said that, compared to the generation of their parents, it has become more difficult to buy a house.

While 58% indicated that it is now much more difficult to buy a house, 23% thought it was a little more difficult, 2% thought it was much easier, 5% thought it was a little easier and 11% saw no difference in the difficulty of buying a house.
