The mayor of Seattle, Bruce Harrell, a democrat, crossed a re-election earlier this year in the highly blue city of the North West Pacific, in the hope of becoming the first mayor of Seattle to win re-election in two decades.
However, Harrell’s path to secure a second term became much steep after the longtime progressive organizer Katie Wilson entered the race in March.
Wilson, whom political experts compared to New York Zohran Mamdani, quickly became the favorite among the many Challengers of the Mayor.

Tuesday’s primary will reduce the current field of nine candidates for two for the general elections of November.
“My re -election is supported by more than 100 current and old elected officials, work and affordable housing, environment, community and transport leaders,” Harrell wrote on social networks last week. “I am proud of the broad and diversified coalition that we built to advance Seattle.”
Harrell was elected in 2021, while Seattle began to recover from the cocovated pandemic and violent protests and riots that rocked the city after the murder of George Floyd.
He worked during his mandate as mayor to improve public security, attack homelessness and help companies in difficulty recover. The mayor underlined the drop in crime across the city since he took office.
However, Wilson, a transit activist and co-founder of the Transit Riders Union, criticized Harrell, arguing that he focuses more on the dismantling of homeless camps than on shelters. Wilson claims that Harrell, who served three mandates for the municipal council before winning the elections as mayor, is part of the political status quo which allowed the cost of living the city to skyrocket.

Similar to the Democratic Socialist Mamdani, who rocked the nation’s political world by going beyond the former governor Andrew Cuomo and nine other candidates at the end of June to win the primary of the town hall of the New York Democratic Party, Wilson highlights accessibility.
“Housing costs have doubled since Bruce Harrell took office,” she said in an article on social networks.
However, unlike Mamdani, Wilson does not identify as a democratic socialist.

Wilson remained competitive with the outgoing mayor in the battle for Campaign Cash. The most recent survey in the race indicated a tight competition between Harrell and Wilson, with the former executive of T-Mobile and the 2009 town hall candidate Joe Mallahan a third very distant.
