The race for the Governor of California warms up while the main candidates change plans

This is an open season in the governor’s primary in California after the former vice-president Kamala Harris said she would not continue the candidacy in 2026 to be the successor to Governor Gavin Newsom.

On July 30, Harris said in a statement that she would not ask for her elected functions “for the moment”.

“In recent months, I have seriously thought of asking the inhabitants of California the privilege of serving as governor. I love this state, its inhabitants and its promise. It is my house. But after a deep reflection, I decided that I will not run for the governor in this election,” she wrote, just a day before announcing her memory “107 days.”.

Since the announcement, there have been many major developments in the race, including Lieutenant-Governor Eleni Kounalakis abandoning in place of the treasurer.

“This decision was not taken lightly,” Kounalakis said on Friday. “Right now, I think I can have the biggest impact by focusing on the financial future of California.”

Kounalakis is a longtime friend of Harris, and she seemed to have obtained the support of the former speaker of the Nancy Pelosi Chamber before her release.
“We have many big candidates, one in particular, Eleni Tsakopoulos, whom I support,” said Pelosi in a recent interview with CNN, calling the Lieutenant Governor by his young girl’s name.

His decision to abandon triggered a response from Rick Caruso, a real estate tycoon of Los Angeles who ran against the mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, in 2022. Caruso is considered a potential candidate to enter the race for the governor.

“Eleni Kounalakis embodies ingenuity, creativity and driving that make California brilliant,” Caruso published on Friday. “A highly respected business manager, she has created countless jobs for workers’ families in our state. Her service in the public service has been exemplary. I can’t wait to see her next exceptional contribution to our great state.”

Meanwhile, the domain still has a large pool of candidates, including the former representative Katie Porter, the Secretary of Health and Social Services of the Biden era, Xavier Becerra, the superintendent of public education Tony Thurmond and the former mayor of Los Angeles Antonio Villaraigosa.

Porter previously run in the Senate and arrived third in the primary behind Senator Adam Schiff and the former Dodgers star Steve Garvey, a republican.
On the republican side, Steve Hilton and the Sheriff of the County of Riverside, Chad Bianco, arise for a place in the open primary system top two.

Neither Harris nor Newsom have publicly gave rise to the race, and the two are also considered as possible suitors during the 2028 presidential election.

The main election is June 2, 2026.
