The New York Town Hall candidate faces a backlash to overthrow the statue of Columbus

A photo resurfaced by the candidate for New York town hall, Zohran Mamdani, throwing a statue of Christopher Columbus triggers the online backlash and with certain members of the Italian-American community.

“He is disrespectful towards the Italian-American community.” Vivolo added. “If you are offering a community, you offer all communities.”
Joseph Scelsa, the founder and president of the American Italian museum, suggested that it be reckless for Mamdani to alienate the Italians, that the New York Post reported to represent 8% of the population in New York.
“Eliminating such a population of people would be a parody,” said Scelsa. “It is not inclusive. It is an exclusion. Who can say who is a hero and who is not a hero? Columbus is our hero.”

Fox News Digital contacted Mamdani’s campaign but has not received an answer on the position, which is still visible on its X account on Tuesday morning.
Mamdani, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, rocked the political landscape last month when he was victorious in the primary mayor Democrat in New York despite a platform filled with leftist priorities and a record that includes previous calls to finance the police.
Mamdani, who was born in Uganda from Parents of India, has become a target for Moderate Democrats and Republicans for his socialist opinions and recently faced a controversy after being reported that he identified as Asian and African-American during his candidacy for the university.
Mamdani is expected to face several candidates for the general elections in November, notably the current mayor Eric Adams, who presents himself as an independent, republican Curtis Sliwa, and the former governor of New York Andrew Cuomo.
