The new rules of the board of directors of the Air Force separation affect the members of the transgender service

The US Air Force has published updated directives that centralize and standardize separation councils for service members who no longer meet military requirements, including those affected by transgender policy changes.

The Associated Press First reported the change, citing an internal memo dated August 12, 2025.

According to the memo, once a board of directors confirms that a member meets the criteria of the policy, “the council must recommend separation”.

The hearings are closed and will not be recorded. Instead, the case file includes an abbreviated transcription prepared after the hearing. Policy narrows the role of the board of directors to a single factual conclusion.

Supporters of stricter preparation standards argue that the change avoids cases written and clarifies discipline. The AP notes that, in the past, the advice has sometimes retained members despite serious offenses, according to criticism of discretion, has led to inconsistency.

The Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, has made “restoration of warrior ethics” and more strict physical standards at the center of his mandate. In his message from January 25 to force, he swore to “restore warrior ethics … reconstructing our soldiers and restoring deterrence”, then led a rapid examination and on the scale of the department of physical form, body composition and grooming standards.

In July, he tightened the rules for medical renunciation for new recruits, writing that American fighters must be able to play physically and mentally under the most difficult conditions.

The memo indicates that the rules apply in the Air Force department, including spatial force, within the framework of a single consolidated provision authority to ensure a uniform process and monitoring.
