The State Department will now only weigh on foreign elections when there is a clear and convincing “American” interest in doing so, focusing on a strategic meaning on the spread of democratic values.

“In accordance with the accent placed by the administration on national sovereignty, the ministry will only comment on the elections when there is an interest in the foreign policy of the United States clear”, according to a new secretary articulating the memo Marco Rubio directive obtained by Fox News Digital.

“Messages should avoid judging on equity or integrity of an electoral process, its legitimacy or the democratic values of the country in question.”

The service note, reported for the first time by the Wall Street Journal, said that the United States “would firmly hold its own democratic values and celebrate these values when other countries are choosing a similar path”, but would continue relationships where “strategic interests are aligning”, instead of focusing on values.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio attended a signature ceremony for a peace agreement between Rwanda and the Congo Democratic Republic in the State Department on June 27, 2025 in Washington.

It is sort of frightening ‘: managers report surprising revelations from the cuts of the deep state department

Upposts abroad can always display public messages congratulating the winner of an election without a high-level panel, unless the result is disputed, but it is requested to focus on the “result of an election, not the process”.

If an office wishes to publish messages denouncing the process of an election, as in the event of violence during voting or fictitious elections, it needs a higher level of the office and such authorizations will be “rare”.

“Using messages on the elections to advance an American foreign policy goal,” said the note. “Do not use it to promote an ideology.”

The official statements that write are responsible for wondering: “Would the president say it?”

The United States’s point of view on an election is closely monitored by opposition groups and human rights activists, and sometimes defines whether a nation is sanctioned or granted foreign aid.

In a speech in Saudi Arabia in May, President Donald Trump said that the United States refrains from telling other countries how to manage its internal affairs, redirecting American policy which caused interventions through the Middle East for decades.

But still, in some cases, Trump weighed on the affairs of other countries: last week, he imposed a 50% rate in Brazil due to the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro, whom prosecutors accuse of having tried to overthrow the results of the 2022 elections in a violent graph.
