A navy pilot was saved from the waters off Virginia on Wednesday after a Super Hornet F / A-18 fell during a routine training flight.

The accident occurred around 10 a.m., according to Lieutenant Jackie Parashar, spokesperson for Naval Air Force Atlantic. The pilot, assigned to Striper Fighter Squadron (VFA) 83 in Virginia Beach, was found by research and rescue team at 11:21 and taken to a local hospital. The jet remains in the water while the navy studies the cause.

Once the survey is completed, the navy will decide to order a security interval, a break in operations to focus on safety training and risk reduction.

The incident is the last of a F / A-18 misadventure chain. In May, a Super Hornet slipped into the Red Sea after failing to land on USS Harry S. Truman. The two pilots were safely ejected. A week earlier, another jet left Truman’s bridge during a towing operation.

Each F / A-18 costs around $ 67 million, according to the Naval Air Systems order.

A former senior defense official told Fox News Digital that recent misadventures “deserve to be examined – in particular in the light of all the other extreme challenges with which the navy is confronted”.

\ The manager added: “It is interesting for me that the F-35 and the V-22 receive an in-depth examination of the press when an accident occurs, but the rates of these aircraft stand well compared to the navy super frelles, which somehow get a pass.”

Another familiar source with Navy Procurement said that recent accidents were not unexpected, which was one of the reasons why the service had agreed to buy 17 other super hornets in 2024.

Since the 2015 fiscal year, the F / A-18 and its variants-F / A-18E, F / A-18F and EA-18G-have been involved in 42 class A flight accidents, the most serious category, covering accidents that cause death, an airplane destroyed or more than 2.5 million dollars.

This reaches an average of around 4.2 class A accidents per year, or 2.18 per 100,000 hours of flight, according to data provided to Fox News Digital by Naval Safety Command.

In all the habited navy planes, the medium -to -class miserie rate was 2.29 per 100,000 hours of flight.
