The Treasury Department announced on Wednesday that it would officially impose sanctions on the Brazilian judge of the Supreme Federal Court Alexandre de Moraes, the lawyer conducting a criminal investigation against the former right -wing president Jair Bolsonaro.
The news of the sanctions comes after President Trump threatened a 50% rate on Brazil products, unless the country stops what Trump described as an “unjust” and politically motivated case against Bolsonaro who invoices the former Brazilian president to have organized a coup attempt. An opinion announcing the sanctions of the Treasury Department allegedly alleged that Moraes used his position to authorize “arbitrary” detentions before the trial, to repress freedom of expression and target political opponents.
“Alexandre de Moraes took on him to be a judge and jury in an illegal witch hunt against us and the Brazilian citizens and companies”, secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent. “De Moraes is responsible for an oppressive censorship campaign, arbitrary detentions that violate human rights and politicized proceedings – including former President Jair Bolsonaro.”
“Today’s action clearly indicates that the Treasury will continue to hold those who threaten the American interests and the freedoms of our citizens responsible,” added Bessent.
