Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accused the United States on Tuesday and Israel of having committed a “serious betrayal of diplomacy” by performing air strikes on Iranian cities, telling the United Nations world leaders that attacks violated international law and came to peace efforts.

Speaking in his first address at the United Nations General Assembly, Pezeshkian said that the American strikes in June on Iranian nuclear installations had come while Iran was engaged in diplomatic negotiations, and he warned that such actions led to erode the foundations of global stability.

“Air assault … was a serious betrayal of diplomacy and a subversion of efforts towards the creation of stability and peace,” said the president.

“This cheeky assault, in addition to the murder of citizens, women, scientists and intellectual elites of my country, has imposed a serious blow to the prospect of peace in the region.”

In June, seven American B-2 bombers abandoned “Bunker Buster” bombs of 30,000 pounds on Iranian nuclear sites. The United States has declared the mission of success, and former President Donald Trump said that the Iranian nuclear program was “completely erased”.

Pezeshkian, however, said that Iran had never intended to develop a nuclear weapon and enrich uranium for civilian nuclear purposes.

“We are not looking for arms. It is our belief based on the edict issued by the supreme chief and by the religious authorities,” said the Iranian president.

“We have never looked for weapons of mass destruction, and we will never seek them.”

He accused Washington and his allies of a double standard, highlighting American support in Israel in Gaza and other regional conflicts, while launching Iran as a victim of aggression who killed civilians, scientists and journalists.

Pezeshkian equaled the strikes against Iran to what he described as a wider scheme of assault sustained by the West through the Middle East, citing Israel’s offensive in Gaza as “genocide” and denouncing the “Grand Israel” project as a delusional diagram destabilizing the whole region. He accused the United States of allowing the actions of Israel in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria and Yemen, and urged Muslim states to unite in collective defense.

“The world in these two years has experienced a genocide in Gaza, the destruction of houses in Lebanon, the devastation of the infrastructure of Syria, the assault against the people of Yemen and the assassination of Iranian scientists,” said Pezeshkian.

“All this under the full support of the most armed regime on the face of the earth, under the pretext of self-defense. Do you want to reconstruct yourself with such things?”

The Iranian chief described his country as resounding in the face of pressure, insisting that military and economic coercion turned against him.

“The patriotic and valiant inhabitants of Iran have exposed themselves to the attackers and the self-destruction of their arrogant calculations,” he said. “The enemies of Iran have involuntarily fortified sacred national unity. The people of Iran, despite the most serious, prolonged and overwhelming economic sanctions … Increase in unison to support their valiant armed forces.”

Pezeshkian’s remarks also underlined the depth of Iran’s hostility towards Israel.

He said officials to target children in Gaza “are not worthy of his human name” and said that such crimes prove that Israel “will never prove to be trustworthy partners”.
