Friday, the House of Representatives adopted a resolution to honor the “life and inheritance” of the deceased conservative activist Charlie Kirk, just over a week after being shot in a university campus speech in UTAH.

The measure obtained bipartite support during a 310-58 vote, the Democrats and the Republicans who quickly increased to condemn political violence following the assassination of Kirk.

The vote, however, divided the Democrats with 95 legislators voting to adopt the resolution, 58 voting against it and 22 Do not vote at all.

Thirty-eight democrats also voted “present” on resolution. The three main democrats in the Chamber-the head of the minority Hakeem Jeffries, Dn.y., Whip Katherine Clark, D-Mass., And the president of the Caucus Pete Aguilar, D-Calif. – All voted in favor of the measure.

Democratic leadership of the Chamber did not expressly say to their caucus how to vote on the resolution, but has communicated that they would support it, according to two sources familiar with the discussions.

The measure of honoring Kirk, led by President Mike Johnson, R-La., Has welcomed the founder of Turning Point USA as “one of the most important voices in America, engaging in respectful civilian discourse through university campuses, media platforms and national forums, always trying to raise the truth, to promote understanding and to strengthen the Republic”.

He also said that “the commitment of the civilian discussion and the Kirk debate was a model for young Americans through the political spectrum, and he worked tirelessly to promote unity without compromising the conviction”.

He called his murder “a reminder that gives to reflect the growing threat posed by political extremism and hatred in our society” and “calls all Americans – constantly of race, affiliation of parties or beliefs – to reject political violence, to motivate himself to a respectful debate, to support American values ​​and to respect each other as American colleagues”.

The resolution also invoked the Christian faith of Kirk, affirming that the Chamber “honors the life, leadership and heritage of Charlie Kirk, whose firm dedication to the Constitution, civil speech and biblical truth have inspired a generation to cherish and defend the blessings of freedom.”

Although the legislators on both sides come out quickly to condemn the murder of Kirk and political violence as a whole, the following days saw partisan divisions soaring the case.

Representative Ilhan Omar, D-minn., Was among the Democrats targeted by the law for his response to the death of Kirk, both in an interview on the progressive point of sale Zeteo News and in the republication of a video of social media which criticized the answers of the Kirk allies to his murder.

The representative Nancy Mace, RS.C., directed a failed offer of Omar censorship on her reaction, which was deposited when four republicans, three of which cited the protections of the first amendment, voted to block the measure.
