As she closes the migrant shelters of her state of sanctuary, criticism accuse the Democratic Governor of Massachusetts Maura Healey of simply moving the costs to a program that makes migrants eligible to receive at least $ 30,000 in housing over two years.

THE Boston Herald said in June that the Healey administration increased spending on the Homebase of Massachusetts to $ 97 million in 2025, compared to $ 9.5 million in 2022, according to state data.

The point of sale said that families eligible in the shelter system managed by the Massachusetts were provided with $ 30,000 in rental aid over two years. According to the Herald, the total workload for the base of the house increased under Healey, going from 1,473 in January 2023 to 7,767 in April 2025, more than 400%. The point of sale also said that some eligible families may qualify for an additional $ 15,000 in the third year of aid, but that state officials planned to suspend the aid of the third year in July.

After this report, the president of the Massachusetts GOP, Amy Carnevale, said that the Homebase program was “shelters by another name”.

“Taxpayers provide families with almost unlimited migrants using free rental. Meanwhile, federal action means that these families will not receive a work permit as soon as” she continued, adding: “The migrant refuge crisis is not over, and the cost change is not leadership.”

However, a spokesperson for Healey postponed criticism, telling Fox News Digital that the governor is the first to demand that families receive basic funds prove their legal status as well as the Massachusetts residence.

The spokesman said that the claims that illegal foreigners benefit from the program. “Are completely false.”

“Each family must have legal status and prove the residence of Massachusetts in the Homebase program. Governor Healey is the first governor to demand this. In fact, Homebase has been operated for more than a decade, including under the previous republican administration, and Governor Healey is the first to implement additional eligibility conditions,” said the spokesman.

This month, Healey announced the closure of all the remaining hotel shelters in the state of the bay in the middle of the official cessation of its executive emergency focused on the influx of migrants in the state of the state.

In a statement sent by email to Fox News Digital, Carnevale said that “friends, favors and failures continue to emerge as it declares that the migrant crisis is over”.

“Healey should scam the dressing and tell the public if these same oversights occur in the Homebase program,” she continued.

“The abuse of taxpayers’ dollars, associated with an astonishing lack of surveillance by Maura Healey and his administration, will define his heritage as governor.”

Meanwhile, Jon Fetherston, a former director of migrant shelters of Massachusetts who whistled about crime and creeping abuses that take place in the system, said that “instead of creating stability, Homebase has become a rotating door of short -term rental aid”.

He said that because migrants often spend most of their $ 30,000 on initial costs, many become unable to maintain their accommodation in a few months.

“The expansion by the Healey administration of the Homebase program was sold to the public as a solution, which would save money, would reduce dependence on the shelter and help migrant families to become self-sufficient. But the reality is very different,” he explained. “Homebase is now an inflated and poorly managed program that fails both the taxpayers who finance him and the migrants he claims to help.”

“Homebase, in its current form, is a broken promise,” he said. “Taxpayers are preparing for an invoice of almost $ 100 million with little transparency, no measurable results and no end in sight. The promise of savings in the closure of hotel shelters is quietly replaced by stolen door expenses that are still lacking in responsibility.
