The former NFL referee, Terry McAulay, was not satisfied with the way in which the university football referees used the new injury rule in the victory of Georgia Tech against Colorado on Friday evening.
McAulay underlined a crucial decision with 2:34 to make in the fourth quarter. The yellow jackets and the buffaloes were on par with 20 each. A Georgia Tech player fell with an injury and the medical staff came out on the field to check it. However, Georgia Tech was charged one of their three downtime due to the stop in play.

The NCAA has made it a duty to suppress the forty injury players. If a player on the field presents himself as injured after the ball is spotted for the next game, the team of this player will be billed a waiting period. If the team has no dead time, a game penalty of 5 yards would be assessed to the team.
In this case, McAulay did not agree with the officials of the Big 12 conference.
“The Big 12 is coupled to be ridiculously too unofficial concerning the new injury rule. Again, this player was clearly injured at the end of the game, and yet the offense has always been charged,” he wrote on X.

“What aggravates, the manager of the replay can communicate on the ground at the time of the injury and did not note that it was well before the ball was spotted.”
McAulay asserted the same point in the last weekend match between Kansas State and Iowa State.
“We already have an example of the reason why I have expressed concerns that this rule unfairly penalizes a team that has done nothing wrong. This player is clearly injured and yet, because he went after the ball was spotted, they were accused of dead time,” he wrote. “Worse, it seems that he has shown that he had been injured before the ball was spotted.
“It’s not a good rule.”
Georgia Tech won the match, 27-20.

The NCAA football rules committee has targeted players who pretend to stop the game clock. In addition, a player must sit on a game even if the team gets a waiting period and may not return to a health professional approves it.
