A federal immigration judge ordered Mahmoud Khalil to be expelled to Algeria or Syria after deciding that he has hidden information on his request for an American green card.
Judge Jamee COMANS rendered the September 12 decision in Louisiana and said Khalil had not disclosed his internship with the United Nations Agence on Rescue and Works (UNRWA) and links with the disinvestment of apartheid from Columbia University, an anti-Israeli coalition of the campus.

She rejected Khalil’s request for help, writing that omissions were deliberate and constituted grounds of withdrawal.
Federal authorities argue that the false statements of Khalil involved politically sensitive affiliations, raising both national security and the concerns of foreign policy.
Khalil, a legal permanent resident, was arrested by immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on March 8 in his apartment in Manhattan.
He spent more than three months in detention in Louisiana before being released in June, when the American district judge Michael Farbiarz judged that he was neither a risk of theft nor a danger to the public.

Farbiarz also temporarily blocked Khalil’s withdrawal while examining his assertion that government’s actions constituted reprisals for a protected political discourse.
Khalil’s legal team confirmed on Wednesday that it planned to appeal the decision at the Board of Immigration Appeals. They considered the case as a broader battle of civil rights.

“It is not surprising that the Trump administration continues to fight against me for my exercise of freedom of expression,” Khalil said in a statement. “Their last attempt, thanks to an immigration court in Kangaroo, again explains their real colors.”
