Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancershould take the lives of more than 8,400 people in the United States this year, according to the American Cancer Society.

The chances of melanoma spread to other places increase with each cancer stadium.
“For the earliest stage, this risk is estimated at less than 5%, increasing for patients with stage 2 disease to a wider range, from 5% to a low end up to 40% to 50% for the most advanced stadium patients,” said Monroe.
In stage 3 patients (those who have regional spread via transit metastases or adjacent lymph nodes), up to 30% to 40% will develop remote metastases, with a risk of 16% to 17% of brain metastases, added the doctor.

The brain and the lungs are the most common metastase sites for melanoma, have confirmed experts.
If the patient has deep lesions in the skin or involve lymph nodes, the risk of propagation of melanoma is higher – from 20% to 70%, according to Jose Lutzky, MD, director of the oncology services at the comprehensive Cancer Center in the south of Florida.
Treatment and prevention
Metastatic melanoma was once considered mainly resistant to treatment because it did not respond to Chemotherapy and radiationNoted Dr. Joshua Strauss of Advanced Care ONCOLOGY and Hematology Associates of the Atlantic Medical Group of Morristown, New Jersey.

“Due to the progress of the treatment of melanoma in the last 10 to 15 years, even very advanced melanoma can be healed in up to 50% of cases with modern immunotherapy treatment“He told Fox News Digital.
“More recently, cell therapy has been approved to treat these advanced melanomas that do not respond to immunotherapy.”
Melanoma prevention
To prevent melanoma, it is important to reduce exposure to Ultraviolet radiationEspecially in people with slightly pigmented skin, advised Strauss.
“Sun cream and sun protection clothes are essential,” he said.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying a water -resistant sunscreen with wide spectrum protection against UVA and UVB, and SPF 30 or more, before sun exposure.

Strauss uses the acronym ABCDE to differentiate a normal mole and melanoma.
“Taupes with asymmetry, irregular borders, several colors, the diameter larger than a pencil eraser and the evolutionary or changing characteristics require a more in-depth evaluation,” he said.
