The George Mason University violated the title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by illegally using diversity, actions and inclusion practices, the Ministry of Education announced on Friday.
The Office of the Department of Civil Rights opened an investigation into hiring and promotion practices of the institution last month following a complaint filed by several of its teachers who claimed preferential treatment were granted to potential and current teachers of “under-represented groups” to advance “anti-racism”.
The complaint accused the president of George Mason, Gregory Washington, of publishing advice that favors diversity initiatives on qualifications.
“In 2020, University President Gregory Washington called for the abolition of the” racist vestiges “from the GMU campus,” said Craig Trainor, interim assistant secretary at the Ministry of Education, in a statement. “Without a suspicion of self -awareness, President Washington then carried out a campaign on a university level to implement illegal dei policies that intentionally discriminate on the basis of the breed. You cannot invent this.”

“Despite this unfortunate chapter in the history of Mason, the university now has the possibility of complying with federal laws on civil rights by concluding a resolution agreement with the civil rights office,” he continued. “Over the past seven months, this is clear: the Ministry of Education of Trump -McMahon will not allow racial exclusion practices – which violate civil rights law, the equal protection clause and the Supreme Court – to continue to correct the educational establishments of our country.”
The Office of Civil Rights has proposed a possible resolution to the President of the University which includes six conditions to which the institution must agree. The university must accept the conditions in the next 10 days to resolve the issue.
The proposed resolution would oblige the University to send a declaration to students and teachers who undertake to comply with title VI in its decisions of recruitment, hiring, promotion and permanence, and the declaration should include personal apology from the president of the university to “promote illegal discriminatory practices”.

The declaration must also be displayed prominently on the University’s website and all contrary declarations should be deleted, according to the proposed resolution.
The University should accept to revise all the policies and documents used in its process of recruitment, hiring, promotion and permanence and must delete all the provisions which require or encourage the use of the race as a factor in these practices.
The federal government also said that George Mason was to provide annual training for anyone involved in these practices to affirm that they would not give preferences according to the breed.
In addition, the institution must make files demonstrating compliance with the agreement available for the government on request.

George Mason’s inability to accept the proposed resolution could lead to a loss of federal funds.
The Trump administration has already withdrawn the funding from several universities, including Harvard, Columbia and the University of California in Los Angeles, for accusations of discrimination and their treatment of anti -Semitism allegedly on the campus.
