Republican governor Greg Abbott threatened to arrest and expel the Democrats from the Texas Chamber who fled the State to avoid a re-cutting vote if they do not return on Monday afternoon.

Dozens of representatives of the Democratic State of Texas arrived in Chicago on Sunday evening to block the vote. Shortly after Abbott published his declaration, the Texas House Democratic Caucus published a simple answer, writing: “Come and take it”.

The press release also described the districts offered by the Republicans, which would potentially ensure five new US House GOP seats in the mid-term elections next year, as a “racist redistribution program of the decade”.

Abbott criticized the dramatic departure of the Democrats, starting his call to return with: “The real Texans do not flee a fight”.

“Rather than doing their job and voting on urgent legislation affecting the life of all Texans, they fled Texas to deprive the Quorum Chamber necessary to meet and lead business,” he wrote.

At least 100 Texas House members of 150 members must be present to carry out business, and around 50 of the Democrats have left. Abbott said that their commitment to vote as elected representatives of the State is a duty and is “not optional”.

The Texas House is expected to meet at 3 pm Monday and Abbott said that “abandoned members of the Democratic Chamber were to return” at that time or by being withdrawn from their positions by the Attorney General of Texas Ken Paxton.

The Republican AG has already said that legislators “should be found and arrested, no matter where they go”.

Abbott also declared that a legislator determined to have “lost his office due to abandonment” can be removed from his functions under the constitution of Texas, thus creating a vacancy, which the governor can “fulfill” under Article III, section 13.

The withdrawal of his functions is not the only threat to the legislators on the run, because Abbott warned that “to request funds to escape the fines they will undergo under house rules” is potentially a crime.

“Any democrat who” requests, accepts or agrees to accept “such funds to help violate legislative functions or for voting purposes may have violated corruption laws,” he wrote, citing the Criminal Code of Texas. He added that anyone “offers, confers or agrees to confer” money to flight legislators could also face accusations.

Abbott concluded his declaration by saying that he “would use (his) complete extradition authority to demand the return to Texas of any potential criminal outside the state”.

The current conception of the proposal, which is not final, would traditionally include blue cities like Dallas and Houston in favor of the Republicans, and would move the Democratic representative Jasmine Crockett on his own district, according to a precedent Fox News digital report.

During a press conference in Chicago on Sunday, the president of the Caucus Democrat de la Chambre, Gene Wu, said that the legislators are “not there to play political games. We are here to demand the end of this corruption process”.

The governor of Illinois, JB Pritzker, shared his support for the Democrats of Texas at the press conference, describing their departure as an “act of fair courage”, while claiming that the Republicans want to silence “millions of votes, in particular black and Latin voters”.

“The Democrats of Texas had no choice but to leave their country of origin, prevent a vote from taking place and protecting their voters,” said Pritzker.

The legislators have not declared a potential calendar for the return to Texas.
