The Democrats of the Texas Chamber left the state on Sunday in order to stop a removing vote on Monday, affirming that the legislation “uses an intentionally racist card” to undermine the votes of black and Latin voters in the state of Texas.

The absence of Democrats means that the Republicans are unable to move forward with a vote provided under the rules of the Chamber, blocking the potential adoption of redistribution legislation which would establish a new Congress card which could lead to five new US House GOP seats during the mid-term elections of 2026.

“This is not a decision that we take lightly, but it is the one we take with absolute moral clarity,” said the representative of the Gene Wu, president of the Democratic Caucus of the Chamber on Sunday.

Most of the Democrats in the Chamber fled to Chicago, while others went to New York and Boston.

Texas House stipulates that at least 100 members of the chamber of 150 members must be present to lead business, and around 50 Democrats are absent – which means that the vote is blocked until their return. We do not know how the Democrats plan to proceed, and Wu told journalists that specific plans were still in the air.

The redistribution legislation would move democratic voters to launch districts in those who are more solidly republican, and would also move other republican voters in districts that lean more to Democrats – finally pave the way to more GOP seats.

It is not the first time that the Democrats have been fleeing the state to protest against the legislation.

In July 2021, more than 50 Democrats also left the state of Texas and went to Washington, DC, to equalize the legislation of Texas which would implement new voting restrictions under the loss of President Donald Trump of the 2020 elections, which, according to some Republicans, were “stolen”.

More specifically, the measure that the Democrats have opposed included new restrictions on the identification of voters for those who voted by mail and prohibited in the steering wheel and the prolonged voting hours. Likewise, the measure included new limitations for those working in the polls and prevented local electoral officials from distributing a ballot by mail to anyone who had not officially asked for one.

The Democrats finally returned to Texas for weeks later, after several members caught Covid-19 while in DC, and the House Republicans finally adopted the measure in August 2021 before the Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott reported it in September 2021.

Meanwhile, Abbott threatened to stop the Democrats who left the state on Sunday, if they are not back at 3 p.m. Monday when Texas House meets. Despite this, there is no indication of the moment when the Democrats plan to return to Texas.

“Rather than doing their job and voting on urgent legislation affecting the life of all Texans, they fled Texas to deprive the room of the quorum necessary to meet and lead business,” Abbot said in a statement on Sunday evening.

The Democrats of Texas attracted the support of the Governor of Illinois, JB Pritzker, who described the decision of the Democrats to flee Texas an “act of fair courage” and accused the Republicans of having tried to silence “millions of votes, in particular black and Latin voters”.

“The Democrats of Texas had no choice but to leave their country of origin, to prevent a vote from taking place and to protect their voters,” said Pritzker at a press conference on Sunday.
