Iowa democrat, Catelin Drey, defeated the Republican Christopher Prosch on Tuesday on Tuesday for an open seat in the State Senate, overthrowing the seat held by the Republican and breaking the supermajure of the GOP in the upper chamber for the first time in three years, according to the unofficial results of the office of the auditor of the county of Woodbury.

Drey obtained 55% of the votes in the race to replace the senator from the Republican State at the end of the Witt senator, who died in June at the age of 66 after a battle against pancreatic cancer.

This is the second time this year that the Democrats have overturned a headquarters of the State Senate under republican control in Iowa, after the Democrat Mike Zimmer beat Republican Katie Whittington in a special election in January.

Drey won a president of the district, Donald Trump, carried more than 11 points last year, and the president won the Zimmer district of more than 20 points.

Democrats have won several other special elections victories this year while the party hopes to rely on the momentum leading to the mid-term elections next year, when they try to return the majority of the GOP to the American Chamber and to the American Senate.

“Iowans see Republicans for whom they are: selfish liars who will throw their voters under the bus to buffer the disastrous program of Donald Trump – and they are ready for change,” said the president of the National Democratic Committee Ken Martin in a statement.

“They put the Republicans to note and make it clear: any republican pushing the unpopular and extreme agenda of Trump has no place in the name of the families of Iowa,” he continued. “This is why all year round, the iowans have chosen the Democrats ready to fight to work Iowans. Do not be mistaken: when the Democrats are organized everywhere, we win everywhere and today is no exception.”

Drey’s victory breaks a republican supermajority in the state Senate, giving Iowa Democrats more authority to stop GOP’s initiatives – including the ability to stop the governor’s candidates, who require two -thirds support for confirmation.
