The mayor of Louisville, Kentucky, informed the Ministry of Justice (DOJ) on Monday that he transfers the more restrictive policy of the city on federal immigration prisoners after the government warned that this will continue.
Mayor Craig Greenberg, a Democrat, wrote in a letter obtained by Fox News Digital that the change in policy should avoid being targeted as a “sanctuary” city, a term used to describe jurisdictions with policies in disagreement with the federal immigration application.
“I understand that, by returning to our practices before 2017 and by honoring 48 -hour detainees again, thus functionally extending the period of notice to DHS from 5 to 12 hours to 48 hours, Louisville will no longer be considered a sanctuary jurisdiction and, therefore, will no longer be vulnerable Brett Shumate.” The city will therefore adjust its detention policy Doj federal. “

The mayor’s reversal comes after the DoJ warned in a letter last month that Louisville’s detention policy hampered the ability of the Trump administration to seduce immigration there. The DOJ said that states and cities that are not in accordance with Greenberg had faced legal action and were dismissed on federal funding.

Detention policies are one of the most common reasons why cities become sanctuaries for illegal immigrants.
Immigration and customs application (ICE) use detention forms to inform prisons that the federal authorities have identified a possible illegal immigrant in local detention that Ice wishes to hold. The jurisdictions of the sanctuary have policies in place to ignore these opinions.
In the case of Louisville, the Department of Correctional Services of the Louisville metro did not honor the period of 48 hours requested to hold suspects, thus releasing the suspects of the guard before the ice could stop them.
The revelation of the change of policy of Louisville comes after the prosecutor General Pam Bondi mentioned Tuesday morning in an X post that the city “abandoned its policies of the city of the sanctuary”, although it did not mention the details.

“This should give the example to other cities,” said Bondi. “Instead of forceing us to continue – that we are going, without hesitation – to follow the law, get rid of the sanctuary policies and work with us to repair the illegal immigration crisis.”
The DoJ also brought in immigration proceedings in New York, Chicago, Colorado and elsewhere, although the judges did not weigh on the substance of government arguments at this stage of disputes.
