The candidate for the post of governor of New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill, undertook on Monday to continue the Trump administration in court if the president deployed troops of the National Guard in the Garden State.

Sherrill, which currently represents the 11th district of the New Jersey Congress, made these comments during a public meeting broadcast live on Nueva York Indivision. The public asked Sherrill in Spanish and she answered in English.

An audience member who said that his family had fled Nicolas Maduro’s regime in Venezuela asked Sherrill what she would do if President Donald Trump was deploying federal troops in New Jersey.

Sherrill, a former navy veteran and federal prosecutor, said that American troops “should not be in the streets of our country” – only in rare cases, such as an insurrection or a national crisis. She added that the troops are not formed for police missions like those of the local police.

“And that is why, as a governor, if Trump was trying to deploy troops in our streets, I would be very opposed to this. I would hang him immediately and ask him to stop this – because I think it’s illegal – and to ensure that here in New Jersey, people are safe,” said Sherrill.

Since his return to power in January, President Trump has sent or threatened to send federal troops to nearly a dozen cities – including Baltimore, Los Angeles and Memphis – whom his administration has described as dangerous and prey to crime.

Illinois and Chicago continued the Trump administration to prevent the president from sending hundreds of soldiers from the National Guard to Windy City. This judicial challenge intervened after a federal judge blocked the deployment of the guard in Portland, Oregon.

The Trump administration defended these deployments, saying that they were necessary to combat violent crimes and restore public order. Several officials reacted, accusing the Trump administration of going too far and warning that the federal intervention was only in the situation.

Last month, a federal judge said that the Trump administration “voluntarily” violates the federal law by deploying custody troops in Los Angeles earlier this year following demonstrations against raids against immigration.
