The Bipartisan bill would grant legal status to certain illegal immigrant workers

Representatives Maria Elvira Salazar, R-Fla., And Veronica Escobar, D-Texas, presented legislation on Tuesday to reform the American immigration system, in particular by offering legal status to certain illegal immigrants to continue working in the country in the midst of mass deportation policies of President Donald Trump.

The Dignity Act of 2025 would allow illegal immigrants who have been in the United States for 2021 for up to seven years of legal status with work authorization. Immigrants would pay the return and regularly record it with the Ministry of Internal Security, and their legal status could be renewed according to good conduct and restitution.

The bill would offer a way to permanent residence, but the legal status granted to immigrants would allow no federal advantage or a path to American citizenship.

“The Dignity Act of 2025 is a revolutionary bill that offers the solution to our immigration crisis: securing the border, stopping illegal immigration and offering a long -term immigrants to stay here and work,” said Salazar in a press release. “No amnesty. No documents. No citizenship. Just the responsibility and a path to stability for our economy and our future.”

The bill would be entirely funded by return payments and requests made by immigrants, which means that it will not depend on taxpayers’ money.

The measure would also aim to put an end to capture and release and further strengthen security at the southern border and to oblige employers across the country to use E-VERIFY, the government system to verify the legal status of workers.

It would also expand the training, learning and education of American workers.

The legislation aims to discuss the repression of immigration from the Trump administration, which has strongly affected farms and providers of food services and included raids targeting migrant workers in local businesses, aroused demonstrations in Los Angeles and elsewhere through the United States against the Mass Deportation Agenda.

A recent raid on two cannabis installations in southern California has led to a few hundred arrests of migrants and to clashes between federal immigration agents and demonstrators. One person died after the raids and others were seriously injured.

“I have seen the devastating consequences of our broken immigration system, and as a member of the congress, I take in the first hand, I take my obligation to offer a solution. A realistic and common sense compromise is achievable and is particularly important given the urgency of this moment. Escobar said.

“Immigrants-in particular those in the United States for decades-are a critical component of our communities and also of the American workforce and economy,” she continued. “The vast majority of immigrants are residents who work hard and respectful of laws; and most Americans recognize that it is in the interest of our country to find bipartisan reforms. We can adopt legislation that incorporates both humanity and security, and the act of dignity of 2025 offers a balanced approach that restores dignity to people who tried to sail in a broken system a long time.”

The congress has worked in the past on the complete immigration reform, but Salazar and Escobar are optimistic, their bill could lead to important bipartisan support.

A bipartite group of 20 other members of the Chamber has already signed the bill.

The administration has already started working to offer some protection to certain migrant workers, and Trump said last month that he was considering a means for some migrant workers to stay in the United States
