At least 19 people were killed and 164 injured as an Air Force training jet of Bangladesh collapsed in a university and school campus in the capital Dhaka on Monday after having encountered a technical problem shortly after takeoff, said a military spokesman.
The F-7 BGI Jet took off at 1:06 p.m. from the Bangladesh Air Force base in Kurmitola, Dhaka, as part of a routine training mission, but met a mechanical failure, said spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Sami Ud Dowla Chowdhury.
“The pilot … made a valiant attempt to divert the plane from the densely populated areas. Despite his best efforts, the plane … crashed in a two-story building belonging to the Milestone school and college,” he said.
The pilot was one of the people killed in the incident, said the army, adding that a committee had been trained to investigate his cause.

The Chengdu F-7 is the version designed by license of the Soviet Mig-21.
