The army extends the use of AI with smart glasses Ray-Ban for the training of soldiers

The army is expanding its use of artificial intelligence beyond drones – portable intelligent glasses that cause mechanics on the ground in automated defenses against cheap enemy swarms – because managers warn counter -mealing is now “problem 1A” for the nation.

Addressing journalists this week, the Army Secretary Dan Driscoll described a pilot program in which soldiers wear compatible Ray-Ban glasses that record repair work and then use generative models to walk less experienced troops thanks to the maintenance of infantry squad vehicles. He said it reflects a new push to put consumer technology in force “much faster” than in the past. Although Meta may have spent billions of billions of billions to develop the glasses, the army tests them for around $ 400 per pair.

General Randy George, the chief of staff of the army, said that the same approach applies to the first emerging challenge of the Pentagon: defending against drones.

“This is a problem 1A that we face as a country,” said Driscle, stressing that counter-drone technology must be cheap, fast and automated. “If you think of a drone swarm … It’s an almost impossible idea for even human beings (to manage).”

This challenge was highlighted abroad, where advanced planes were used to intercept relatively cheap drones. “If you have a drone of $ 5,000, you want a $ 2,000 or $ 3,000 interceptor or $ 4,000, and that’s what we focused on,” said George.

Last week, the Dutch F-35 and the Polish F-16s deployed to eliminate dozens of Russian drones flying in Russian territory.

George added that the army is testing proximity towers and high energy lasers, while the largest obstacle defends against drones in congested civil space.

As part of the army’s “continuous transformation” initiative, George said 25 brigades will be revised over the next two years to make them more deadly, mobile and survivable in high threat environments. The first armored brigade combat teams should run the National Training Center in California in November, followed by a large -scale exercise in Hawaii.

George also underlined the modernization of armor, saying that the new generation of the army M1E3 reservoir – envisaged as a lighter and faster replacement for the Abrams – could reach units next year. This would mark a major acceleration, because the previous projections suggest that the vehicle would not be part before the 2030s.

To pay for its modernization campaign, Driscoll said that the army planned to reduce $ 48 billion over five years of the programs it no longer needs, to reinvest in drones, air defenses and long -range fires.

The service also launched a “fuse” fund of $ 750 million to support small and medium -sized enterprises and previewed new retail acquisition reforms at the Ausa conference next month. Partly modeled on the rapid iteration practices of commercial companies, the changes will color soldiers, engineers and entrepreneurs to accelerate design and land.

Officials also underlined internal efforts. George said the army is now building its own drones in deposits with entirely American parts – including already flying models in Ukraine – to help reconstruct stocks. Driscoll has said that 3D printing is tested as a way to overcome the “tyranny of distance” in Indo-Pacific, allowing soldiers to make pieces in the theater instead of waiting for long supply lines.

George underlined Battlefield commands as another area of change. The 4th infantry division now tests command and control applications on robust shelves – replacing the trucks and radios racks which have long army command posts.

This decision is designed to make the headquarters smaller and more difficult to target, although external experts have warned that relying on commercial style devices could introduce new Cyber vulnerabilities and combat sustainability problems.

Driscoll has also credited President Trump to support the army overhaul. “They held the line every time when we made a difficult decision,” he said. However, he recognized that each of the $ 48 billion in cups has defenders of Congress and Industry.
