The American judge says that Trump illegally chopped more than $ 2 billion in Harvard funds

An American judge in Boston blocked the Trump administration’s attempt on Wednesday to end around $ 2.2 billion in federal research funding for Harvard University – marking a major victory for the oldest college in the country, who was disputed with Trump officials for months above federal funding.

US District Judge Allison D. Burroughs rejected the affirmation of the Trump administration that she was trying to overcome Harvard from billions in federal funding due to allegations of anti -Semitism, or the university’s failure to comply with the recommendations of a working group on federal anti -Semitism.

“An examination of the administrative file makes it difficult to conclude something other than the defendants used anti -Semitism as a smoke screen for a targeted and motivated assault on the ideological level against the first universities of this country,” said Burroughs in the 84 -page decision.

“We must fight against anti-Semitism, but we also need to protect our rights, including our right to freedom of expression, and no objective should or be sacrificed on the altar of the other,” she said in his order.

“Harvard is currently, even late, taking measures that she must take to fight against anti-Semitism and seems willing to do even more if necessary,” she added.

Burroughs’ decision is a major victory for the university. This comes from months after Harvard lawyers continued the Trump administration in April for the administration’s attempts to freeze more than $ 2.2 billion in federal funding and blocking other subsidies, which university lawyers supported before the courts constituted an unconstitutional “pressure campaign to influence and exercise control over its academic programs.

The Trump administration, for its part, accused Harvard of “promoting violence, anti -Semitism and coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party on its campus”.

Lawyers from the Trump administration also told Burroughs that they had “all rights” to cancel the funding after Harvard refused to comply with the requests made by a working group on federal anti -Semitism, which they sought to supervise as a simple contract problem, and which should be heard in different court.

The Ministry of Justice and Lawyers at Harvard University asked Burroughs, a nominated appointed by Obama, to decide the case by a summary judgment in early September – a calendar which allowed them to avoid a long trial before the start of the new school year.

Burroughs had ordered the two parties before the courts for long arguments in July and had ended the hearing by saying that it would make a decision after having had enough time to weigh the questions presented before the court.

The decision on Wednesday is a victory for Harvard in his one -month legal struggle with the Trump administration.

“In a turn of events without surprise, the same judge appointed by Obama who ruled in favor of illegal admission practices based on the Harvard race – which was finally canceled by the Supreme Court – just judged against the efforts of the Trump administration to hold Harvard responsible for ramp discrimination on the campus.” Madi Biedermann, a senior communications official from the Ministry of Education, told Fox News Digital in a statement. “Cleaning the universities of our country will be a long road, but it’s worth it.”

Since Trump took office in January, the Trump administration has targeted Harvard with investigations from six distinct federal agencies – encouraging university lawyers to support this year that efforts were nothing more than a pressure campaign designed to force them to comply with administration policies.
