Thai Prime Minister suspended for an appeal disclosed with a Cambodian official after the border incident

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was suspended Tuesday in the midst of an ongoing ethical investigation into a telephone call disclosed with a senior Cambodian official.

“I only thought to do to avoid problems, what to do to avoid armed confrontation, so that the soldiers will not suffer any loss. I would not be able to accept it if I said something with the other leader who could lead to negative consequences,” said Paetongtarn, according to, according to The Associated Press.

After the phone call, the Bangkok streets were filled with demonstrators calling for the eviction of Paetongtarn.

“My true intention in the disclosed conversation, my true 100%intention, was to work for the country to maintain our sovereignty and save the lives of all our soldiers,” Paetongtarn said to the press.

Thailand has experienced its share of political upheavals in recent years. The predecessor of Paetongtarn, Srettha Thavisin, was dismissed by the court last year for a violation of ethics.
