Terry Cole de DEA designated to supervise the DC police under Trump’s order

According to an order published by Bondi on Friday, the role of Cole is defined as the “designer of the duration of the emergency declared by the president in order to direct the mayor of the District of Columbia to provide these services of (MPD) as the Attorney General deems necessary and appropriate.”

“The new order of the prosecutor general of Bondi is stronger because instead of canceling a single poor MPD order, this replacement order requires complete MPD cooperation with the federal immigration authorities,” a spokesperson for the Doj in an email in an email.

“We are not going back, because President Trump remains in control under the law to determine what is necessary and appropriate,” added the spokesperson.

Washington, DC, the police chief, Pamela Smith, will technically remain in his post, but Cole will play a key role by ensuring that the city leaders such as Smith and Mayor Muriel Bowser comply with the requests of the federal government, in particular in cooperation with the immigration authorities.

Dozens of arrests already made since taking control have been illegal immigrants, because ice and other federal agencies are patrolling the streets of the capital.

Cole has vast experience in the application of laws, in particular by working at the DEA for more than 20 years before withdrawing from the federal government in 2020, according to its profile on the DEA website. Subsequently, he was secretary of Virginia for public security and internal security from 2023 to 2025.

“I am happy to see that this happens under the direction of Terry Cole,” said Governor of Virginie Glenn Youngkin, “Mornings with Maria” on Fox Business Network earlier this week, explaining how a model of application of similar law will be used in North Virginia in partnership with the Commonwealth and Federal Managers.

Youngkin noted in February that Cole had played a major role in the fight against illegal drugs in the Commonwealth.

“His leadership of our Free Operation Initiative in Virginia has led to the crisis of tens of thousands of books of illicit drugs, including more than 70 million fatal doses of Fentanyl – and has become a standard of collaboration between federal, state and local police,” said Youngkin. “He will first put the safety of the Americans as a DEA chief. It is an excellent day to be an American and a bad day to be a drug trafficker.”
