The side effects of GLP -1 can vary – but a less known result reported popular weight loss drugs is hair loss or thinning.

Some hairstyles have confirmed an increase in customers who complain of losing their hair during weight loss trips.

This includes Ashley Dimatteo, owner of Ashley Lauren Beauty Lounge in Westchester, New York, and Briana Delvecchio, color specialist and hairdresser at the Dimatteo show. The two spoke with Fox News Digital in an interview with the camera. (See the video at the top of this article).

“There was certainly an increase because customers reach a hair loss,” said Dimatteo, noting that it goes from gradual to fasting and thinning to hair loss completely.

Delvecchio agreed that she had “some” customers who bring back thin and drier hair, which she suspects could be due to weight loss drugs.

The hairdresser, who herself takes a GLP-1 medication, said there may be some reasons for hair changes-including new drugs, vitamin deficiencies and weight loss, which can exert stress on the body.

Becky Watt, an Ohio hairdresser with more than 20 years of experience, said that she also noticed that customers were losing their hair while taking weight loss.

“I saw clarification and workforce, and a lot of hair that comes out very easily when washed.”

“I saw clarification and workforce, and a lot of hair that comes out very easily when washed,” she told Fox News Digital. “I didn’t notice bald spots.”

However, she had customers who take medication without any hair loss, added Watt.

Medical factors

In a distinct interview, Dr. Philip Rabito, endocrinologist in New York, said that this reaction, called Telogen Effluvium, is a response to weight loss stress that affects the hair follicle.

The answer is only temporary, he noted. The hair will fall, then resume once the weight loss stabilizes after a few months.

“It is a response to serious physical stress – and weight loss is considered famine,” said Rabito. “It is the speed of weight loss that is correlated with the amount of hair loss.”

Before weight loss, traditional bariatric surgery would cause 70% loss of excess body weight in about six months, said Rabito – which was often followed by hair loss in six to nine months.

“Your body does not understand that it is a healthy weight loss-your body thinks that it is hungry,” he reiterated. “It happens to almost everyone, some people more than others.”

Those who lose weight more repetitively are more at risk of hair loss, said Rabito, as well as those who have an underlying thyroid problem or micronutrient deficiency – generally iron, B12 or vitamin D.

These vitamin deficiencies can worsen as weight loss occurs, so it is important to work with a health professional to balance these levels, according to the doctor.

“From what I have learned by talking to these specific customers, it seems that customers who still eat have hair loss,” said Watt.

“It seems that my clients who say that they had no appetite are those who lose the most hair,” she continued. “I think it may be due to the lack of nutrients and protein, although I am not a doctor.”

Tips for managing hair loss

Dimatteo and Delvecchio have agreed that they “always” advise their customers to see their doctor for a vitamin level check.

“And we will also reduce their hair routine,” said Dimatteo. “Basically, the less it is more during hair loss.”

The owner of the living room suggested following the treatment of the scalp, reducing the use of heat, brushing from bottom to top and avoiding going to bed with wet hair.

“Check with your weight loss doctor or endocrinologist before coming to see us to exclude iron, vitamin D or everything you miss – we must exclude this before you can help you,” said Delvecchio.

“Then we will tell you that we have to work on your scalp health; we will give you a shampoo and a revitalizing that can be a little softer for your hair.”

“It is a response to serious physical stress – and weight loss is considered famine.”

“Stimulation of the scalp is huge,” added Dimatteo.

“Rinse with cold water also helps. Try not to make more hard treatments in the direction of lightning or coloring – spread it as much as possible.”

Rabito noted that losing hair was “part of the game”. He said that he still warns his patients before starting their weight loss journey that it will most likely happen and is a “brand of success”.

“They will lose their hair,” he said. “It will get worse before it improves.”

“But as long as you have vitamins control, have them adequately achieve – when patient trays and weight are stable for a month or two, the body no longer feels famine, and the body is less stressed, then the hair reproduces better than ever.”

Watt has said that it often recommends hair vitamin to its customers with weight loss. “The diet also has a lot to do with that,” she noted.

She also recommended using a shampoo and a revitalizing that are formulated to withstand thinning and hair loss, as well as a hair creation product.

Dimatteo and Delvecchio have assured those who suffer a hair loss that regrowth takes time and there is no need for excessive hair growth treatments.

Delvecchio added: “Hair loss is temporary. It is a positive stress, and it is worth it.”
