Slovenian legislators have become the first country in Eastern Europe to legalize a law on Friday to allow medically assisted suicide for terminal adults, in a change in regional end -of -life policy.

The country’s legislators adopted the bill following a closely watched parliamentary vote with 50 votes in favor, 34 against and three abstain. Voting has also focused on a national referendum requiring extended end -of -life rights.

The legislation comes after a advisory referendum last year in which 55% of voters supported the right to end -of -life autonomy. Although this decision is welcomed as a history, the implementation of the law will not be immediate because the procedures and monitoring mechanisms are still being developed.

The law applies to terminal adults who suffer unbearable suffering without any prospect of improvement. In order for the candidates to be eligible, they must be mentally competent and have already exhausted their available processing options. Individuals suffering only from mental illness will be excluded from eligibility. The patient must provide informed, voluntary and repeated consent. It is believed that the process may require an assessment by several health professionals.

Although it is praised as a historical movement, it will not be immediately implemented because the detailed procedures and the monitoring mechanisms will always be being finalized.

“This is a victory for compassion and dignity,” said a legislator to support the bill. A group for the defense of civil rights opposed to the referendum on the law to cancel the measure.

A group for the defense of civil rights opposing the new law undertook on Friday to request public support for a potential attempt to force a referendum on the measure.

Several other countries, including Canada, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Australia and Colombia, have legalized the so-called dead with dignity.

Last month, the British Parliament voted to legalize assisted death, although the bill must always erase the House of the upper Parliament.
